"David and Bathsheba" King David's (Gregory Peck) Tunic

"David and Bathsheba" King David's (Gregory Peck) Tunic

Description

This striking brown suede tunic was worn by legendary actor Gregory Peck in the classic 20th Century Fox biblical epic David and Bathsheba (1951). The tunic features short sleeves and a V-neck, with the edges of the sleeves and neckline lined in circular brass studs. The interior is lined in brown satin fabric.  Inside, a worn Western Costume Co. Hollywood tag remains intact, with embroidered and stamped text reading:  “Western Costume Co. / HOLLYWOOD / NO. 14-2462-2 / NAME Gregory Peck / Chest 43½ SLEEVE / WAIST SLEEVE”.  The tunic includes a leotard-style strap at the bottom that buttons to the obverse.

Purchased at the September 8, 1996, Butterfield & Butterfield Entertainment Memorabilia Auction, Lot 1004.

Created by legendary designer Charles LeMaire, whose work on the film earned an Academy Award nomination for Best Costume Design (Color) in 1951.

A rare and significant screen-worn garment from one of Peck’s most iconic early performances and a film honored by the Academy for its costume artistry.

Accompanied by a black and white photographic still.

Mannequin not included.

Includes Planet Hollywood Certificate of Authenticity.

Condition

Tunic appears to be intentionally lightly distressed throughout due to age and material. Light stains throughout, small tears on obverse near point of V-neck, and tear on top of proper right shoulder.  Star of David that once adorned the costume is no longer present, although its outline is still visible (this was removed prior to acquisition).
