"David Copperfield" Aunt Betsy Trotwood's (Edith Evans) Costume

Description

Jacket: Olive green period jacket with light green rouched trim throughout. Obverse has six decorative buttons with tassels hanging from the bottom. Interior lining of jacket is a burnt orange satin like material. There is a Bermans & Nathans label on interior with handwriting throughout that reads “34-26” and “35 / 27”. There is another tag pinned to that label with faded markings that are difficult to decipher.

Skirt: Full length olive green skirt with lighter green silk like vertical stripes throughout. Skirt has hook and eye closures along with snap closures on reverse center. Bermans & Nathans label on interior of skirt with handwritten text that reads “35 / 27”.

Bonnet: Green bonnet with lace trim around opening and brown velvet ribbon that wraps around top of bonnet and ties under chin. Exterior of bonnet is dressed with decorative lace and silk. Interior has a Bermans and Nathans label that is partially covered. The number “16” is also handwritten on interior lining. A plastic hair comb has been attached to interior as well.

Condition

Jacket: Tassels and buttons on obverse show discoloration. Threads loose throughout trim. Minor snags to obverse at both shoulders. Small collection on holes on reverse

Skirt: Tears to material throughout bottom of skirt. Minor spots of soling throughout.

Bonnet: Velvet is crushed in areas where it was previously tied. Silk on exterior is splitting.
