Phyllis Diller’s Bo Beep Costume

Description

Bodice: Cream linen bodice with printed images of navy blue, mustard, and rose colored flowers throughout and border along edges of long sleeves. Interior of cuffs of sleeves are lined with white ruffled lace. Shirt has zipper front closure. Neckline and collar of shirt is sheer white silk with vertical lines throughout. Edges of neckline and collar are lined with white lace fabric. Collar has orange velvet strip of fabric around center.

Skirt: Orange and white gingham long skirt with cream linen overskirt with printed images of navy blue, mustard, and rose colored flowers throughout and border along bottom. Dress has hook and eye clasp closure on proper left of waist.

Accompanied by letter written and signed by Diller that reads "This beautiful costume was made for me for a Bob Hope TV Christmas Special where I played his wife. The costumer didn't notice that one of my lines was: 'You never give me anything but skins.' In other words, I wouldn't have been wearing this lovely dress.  I would be wearing ratty old skins. NBC's costume department quickly made up another costume and presented me with this one.  It has never been worn.  The designer is: Warden Neil, Bob Hope Designer."
