This striking screen-worn costume was created for Frank Finlay as Porthos in The Return of the Musketeers (1989), the sequel to the classic swashbuckling adventures based on Alexandre Dumas’ timeless tales. The elaborate ensemble reflects the opulent style and character of the charming and bold Porthos, with rich detailing and exceptional craftsmanship characteristic of period productions from this era.

The costume includes a black jacket adorned with intricate gold and gold lamé embroidery in scrolling designs, leaves, and lion motifs. The wavy center seam is trimmed with gold silk and features a gold lamé-covered button closure. The long sleeves have decorative wavy slits along the outer sides and overturned gold cuffs, while the interior is lined with luxurious gold silk-satin fabric. Accompanying the jacket is a pair of black velvet and gold pinstripe breeches, featuring gold corded trim running along the outer sides of each leg. The trim splits into a wavy pattern toward the lower half, revealing the shimmering gold lining beneath. The breeches are detailed with tan velvet tassels covering the button front closure and additional tassels at the cuffs, each secured by gold buttons. The reverse center waistband features a black lace-up tie closure, and the interior includes gray elastic suspender straps sewn in for practical on-set use.

Inside the waistband, a white Bermans & Nathans label bears the black-stamped text: “FRANK FINLAY / PORTHOS.2. 9896 / R.O.T.M,” confirming the costume’s provenance from The Return of the Musketeers.

Jacket shows small pinholes on the interior reverse from previous display and light wear consistent with production use. Pants exhibit minor fabric tears above the proper right leg cuff and on the reverse, along with some loss of elasticity in the suspender straps, also consistent with use and age.
