"Unknown Treasure" Navy Blue Velvet Overcoat and Trousers

Description

Two-piece ensemble from an unknown production. Appears to be from the late 1970s or early 1980s. 

Coat: Eighteenth-century navy-blue velvet justaucorps with silver accents. Velvet has floral designs pressed throughout. Garment has a single hook and eye clasp at the obverse center of neckline. Twenty decorative buttons line the front with ten on each side of the obverse opening. Silver decorative elements are on both sides of the obverse opening, on the tops of the folded back cuffs on the arms, on and around both side pockets, down the back, and throughout the bottom of the reverse. Top proper right shoulder has an off-white ribbon with pink frills attached to it. Interior lining is purple.

Pants: Navy blue velvet trousers with front flap. Pants open at the obverse via three buttons and a front flap of material that closes with two buttons on the top right and left corners. Legs of the pants terminate just above the knees and are closed with four buttons and a strap at the bottom which closes with a snap button. Reverse of interior waistband has a blank "Bermans & Nathans" label.

Condition

Coat: Tops of shoulders are heavily faded due to light damage. Abrasions on shoulders. Neckline is worn. The interior lining is heavily faded throughout, and a large portion is now a maroon hue instead of a purple hue. There are small tears throughout the lining of the interior and a six-inch horizontal tear on the lining of proper left interior. Lining has slightly separated at the obverse proper left hem at the opening.

Pants: Loose threads at waist. Areas at the ends of both legs are heavily worn with creasing, small tearing, and loose threads, Interior lining at waist band is heavily creased. Abrasion on the reverse interior of waistband due to wear. Exterior areas near bottoms of pant legs are worn. Bottom button is missing on the proper left leg nearest the bottom hem.
