"Young Winston" Lady Churchill's (Anne Bancroft) Costume

Own a rare and authentic piece of film history with this costume made for Anne Bancroft as Lady Randolph Churchill in the 1972 film Young Winston, directed by Richard Attenborough. The tan and cream caraco jacket features delicate lace long sleeves, lace trim around the cuffs and collar, and a velvet waistband accented with fringe. Additional velvet detailing lines the neckline, complemented by a decorative bow at the front. While the jacket displays faux buttons down the front, it actually fastens with hidden snaps and hook closures for ease during filming. The interior includes underarm guards and a sewn-in maker’s label reading: “Bermans & Nathans / 40 Camden St., London N.W.1.”

The matching tan and cream skirt is crafted from a soft, lightweight polyester-like fabric with a pleated hem, lace overlay, and velvet and fringe trim that wraps gracefully around the back to create a draped effect. Two velvet ties at the rear waist are finished with fringe, maintaining the refined Victorian style. Inside the waistband, a label reads: “M. Berman Ltd. / 18 Irving St. / Leicester Sq., W.C.2 / Miss Anna / 1 Bancroft.”

Condition

The jacket shows slight discoloration to the lace trim and some crushing to the velvet waistband. There is a minor tear to the interior material at the neckline, along with an area of damage or repair near the bow on the front right side. The lace on the shoulders shows discoloration, and there appears to be a possible pen mark on the reverse right side of the collar velvet. Minor tears to the lace are present throughout.

The skirt is in overall good condition with minor discoloration to the front fringe, staining and discoloration to the lower pleats, and some looseness in the velvet trim attached to the lace overlay.
