"A Man for All Seasons" (1966) Margaret's (Susannah York) Gown

Own an extraordinary piece of Oscar-winning cinema with this elegant brown silk gown worn by Margaret, portrayed by Susannah York, in the 1966 classic A Man for All Seasons. This beautifully crafted period costume features a corseted bodice and a stomacher adorned with intricate gold trim arranged in a crisscross pattern, highlighted at the top center with a gold and pearl floral pendant. The gown includes striking puffed sleeves with slits along the sides that reveal white silk undersleeves; the edges of the slits are lined with brown lace and fastened with five gold and pearl fleur-de-lys embellishments.

The pleated skirt extends from the bodice and is finished along the bottom edge with gold lace trim. The back of the skirt closes with snap buttons, while the bodice laces with black silk cord for an authentic period silhouette. Inside the bodice on the proper left side is a Bermans & Nathans tag reading “Bermans & Nathans / 40 CAMDEN ST., / LONDON N.W.1 / 88.T68,” accompanied by a barcode label marked “BERMANS & NATHANS LTD / 020001900.” After reviewing film stills, it is evident that the gown was later altered by Angels following its use in the production, including the addition of the gold crisscross trim.

Condition

Tears and holes in silk on each shoulder, with large hole on top of proper left shoulder. White silk of sleeves sleeves have worn down and aren't as bright. Small holes in front of skirt beneath edge of bodice. Stitching attaching skirt to bodice has come undone throughout front. Small holes and tears throughout bottom edge of skirt due to use and age.
