"Crossed Swords" (1977) Edward's (Mark Lester) Costume
Description
This ornate costume ensemble originates from the production of Crossed Swords (1977) and is associated with the character of Edward, portrayed by Mark Lester. Designed to reflect the elegance and pageantry of royal court attire, the ensemble showcases fine decorative detailing and traditional tailoring consistent with period costume design.
The off-white brocade doublet is richly embellished with gold piping and faux pearl decorations throughout. A belt is attached at the waist, enhancing the structured silhouette, while the front fastens with hook-and-eye closures. A Bermans & Nathans costume tag is sewn into the interior, reflecting its professional studio wardrobe origins.
The matching off-white brocade breeches feature gold thread and faux pearl decoration concentrated along the lower portions of the legs. The breeches fasten at the obverse with a snap closure and retain a white interior waistband tag marked with a handwritten “B.” Together, the pieces present a cohesive and visually striking costume ensemble.
Condition
The doublet shows overall darkening, with loose piping in several areas, yellowing to the lining, and a costume tag that is beginning to come loose. The breeches show yellowing throughout, loose gold thread in multiple locations, fraying at the interior thighs, and yellowing to the lining.
