"Hamlet" (1948) Horatio's (Norman Woolan) Robe

"Hamlet" (1948) Horatio's (Norman Woolan) Robe

Description

Offered here is Horatio’s (Norman Woolan) robe from Laurence Olivier’s Oscar-winning 1948 adaptation of “Hamlet.” This striking costume piece features a rich brown robe adorned with cream embroidered scroll motifs along the sleeves and neckline, capturing the elegant period styling seen throughout the film.

The robe fastens at the center front with hook-and-eye clasps, and the interior shoulders are lined with cream linen fabric for added structure. Inside is an original Bermans & Nathans costume house tag reading:

“Bermans & Nathans / 40 CAMDEN ST., / LONDON N.W.1 / RAY PLATT / N.N. PART 2.”
Handwritten text to the right reads “TC. 33.”

The costuming tag indicates that this robe was later reused in a subsequent production, and some alterations were made post-“Hamlet.” Despite this, the piece retains its core characteristics and remains an exceptional artifact from one of cinema’s most acclaimed Shakespeare adaptations.

This is a rare opportunity to acquire a genuine wardrobe piece associated with Horatio, a key character in Olivier’s influential film. An outstanding collectible for fans of Shakespeare, classic cinema, and Golden Age costume design.
