"House of Strangers" Gino Monetti's (Edward G. Robinson) Suit Jacket
"House of Strangers" Gino Monetti's (Edward G. Robinson) Suit Jacket
Description
This brown tweed suit jacket was acquired by the production for use by Edward G. Robinson in the acclaimed 1949 film House of Strangers, directed by Joseph L. Mankiewicz and co-starring Richard Conte and Susan Hayward. This finely tailored piece represents the sophisticated mid-century style associated with Robinson’s on-screen persona and offers an authentic connection to Golden Age Hollywood costume design.
The jacket is tailored from brown tweed with a three-button front closure using dark brown plastic buttons. It features two flap pockets at the waist, a welt pocket at the left chest, and three decorative buttons at each sleeve cuff. The interior is lined in black striped satin, while the sleeves are lined in cream fabric. The underside of the collar is finished in dark brown felt, and an interior pocket is located at the right chest.
Inside the right underarm, the number “50” appears handwritten in blue ink beside partially crossed-out production markings, including “[illegible number] 69 10 2068” and “59” in blue ink. Below these notations, a red ink stamp reading “WESTERN COSTUME CO. / HOLLYWOOD, CALIF.” confirms the piece’s origin from one of the most celebrated wardrobe houses in film history.
A remarkable example of studio-made wardrobe craftsmanship, this Western Costume Co. production-acquired jacket is ideal for classic film collectors, Edward G. Robinson enthusiasts, and admirers of Hollywood’s Golden Age tailoring.
