"Lost in Space" (1998) Proteus Access Panel
"Lost in Space" (1998) Proteus Access Panel
Description
This grey fiberglass “Proteus Access Panel” was production-made for the science-fiction feature Lost in Space, which brought the classic television series to the big screen with a futuristic visual style and large-scale spacecraft sets. The film follows the Robinson family aboard the advanced starship Proteus as they attempt to colonize a distant world, encountering time distortions, alien environments, and dangerous adversaries along the way.
The piece is constructed of molded grey fiberglass and designed as a decorative spacecraft set component intended to represent an access panel from the Proteus. The panel features softly curved edges with inward contours at the center of each side, giving it a distinctive symmetrical shape typical of the film’s sleek production design. The center of the panel includes two oblong cutouts fitted with decorative blue-toned plexiglass applied to the reverse side, creating a futuristic display-like appearance when mounted on a set wall or console.
Each corner of the panel includes a small drilled hole, likely used for mounting or attachment to a larger set structure. The underside of the piece is hollow, consistent with lightweight fiberglass set construction used during film production to create large and visually complex spacecraft interiors while remaining manageable for set installation.
Directed by Stephen Hopkins, Lost in Space starred William Hurt as Professor John Robinson, alongside Matt LeBlanc, Gary Oldman, Heather Graham, and Lacey Chabert. The film is well remembered for its elaborate spaceship sets and futuristic technology, with numerous detailed panels, consoles, and ship components created to bring the Proteus to life on screen.
This Proteus access panel represents an authentic piece of the film’s spacecraft set design and would make a unique display item for collectors of science-fiction film memorabilia, set pieces, and props from the visually ambitious world of Lost in Space.
