"The Emperor's Shadow (Qin Song)" Gao Jianli's (You Ge) Costume and Sword

Description

Costume and sword created by the production for use in the Chinese film "The Emperor’s Shadow (Qin Song)" (1996) for You Ge's character "Gao Jianli." This is a four-piece lot consisting of two robes, belt with sheath, and a sword.

Gray Robe: Long gray semitransparent robe which opens at the obverse. Robe has a pattern of very small white vertical lines throughout it. Vertical slits at the proper right and left sides at the bottom. 

Cream Robe: Heavy cream-colored robe with white vertical stripes. Robe opens at the front. A cord on the obverse proper right is tied to a cord under the proper left arm hole. Then the cord on the proper left exterior is tied to the cord at the reverse center. 

Sword: Heavily tarnished prop metal sword. Blade is dull. Grip is wrapped in brown leather while the pommel is covered in a darker brown leather. Wooden guard has been painted black.

Belt and Sheath: Leather sword sheath with belt. Belt is a long strip of folded brown leather tied into a knot. Black strings have been tied to the wooden belt loop on the reverse of the scabbard. The wooden scabbard is painted black with strips of brown leather wrapped around the center. The chape is flared out with a hump at the center.

Condition

Gray Robe: No damage noted.

Cream Robe: Robe is wrinkled throughout, but very wrinkled near the bottom. Stain at obverse center top. Staining at the bottom hem, most likely from production. Some seams have ripped on the interior. 

Sword: Blade is tarnished and covered in tan accretions. Leather on grip is worn. Small abrasions throughout guard,

Belt and Sheath: Belt is creased and twisted. Leather has hardened within knot.  Locket is scratched with loss of paint. Leather on scabbard is worn with a stain noted at the center. Scratching and paint loss is also on the bottom part of the scabbard and the chape. Chape is loose and can be removed.
