"Unknown Treasure" Jeanne Crain Hat (Possibly from "The Fan")
"Unknown Treasure" Jeanne Crain Hat (Possibly from "The Fan")
Description
Wide-brim hat crafted from soft gray felt, featuring a dramatic striped grosgrain ribbon wrapped around the crown. A large decorative brooch is prominently pinned to the front, embellished with faux gemstones that add a theatrical flair to the otherwise classic silhouette. The underside of the brim is black, providing a bold contrast and adding visual depth when worn. The interior crown contains a studio-style label reading: “1 39 2 3935 549-36 JEANNE CRA”.
Originally cataloged by Sotheby’s as a costume piece from the 1949 film The Fan, although decorative elements do not precisely match those seen in known production stills. A similar gray hat appears in the film around the 1:13 mark; however, there is a clear discrepancy in the decorative details. The striped ribbon and jeweled brooch do not match the on-screen version, strongly suggesting that post-production alterations were made—possibly for reuse in other productions or display.
